Collectors and their Collections
Tomasz Basarabowicz
"Tomek is a Polish collector, who friendly contacted us through our website and very kindly shared his pictures and interests with us. He is a Contributing Editor of one of Poland's leading military history magazines called "Militaria & Fakty". He explains how's collecting in his country"

..."Let me start from introducing myself. 20 years of my 36 I've been interested in several aspects of military history and military technology. My main fancy was armoured fighting vehicles between the very beginnings and 1945. My second main interest was the uniforms of British and Polish armies throughout the ages".

"One of the most popular features of the magazine is a series called "Armoured Forces Lexicon 1918-45" written by a friend of mine and myself. We started from Argentine and now we are at Esthonia, Egypt and Ethiopia ... The information on minor powers is scarce but we are lucky enough to enjoy the assistance of our friends worldwide, South America included."

"Then I turned my hands first to military vehicle die-cast miniatures as I always wanted to own a miniature representation of stuff I write about. After I collected lots of Dinky, Corgi, Solido etc. products I came across two interesting models - William Britain's Vickers/Clyno combination and Charles Biggs' Sepoy Despatch Rider. I ordered both and ... you got me."

"I feel a wee bit isolated here as toy soldier collecting is not very popular in this part of the world. However, these days it attracts more attention than a couple of years ago when it was virtually non-existent.
The most popular subjects are Heinrichsen 30 mm flat figures which are available in antique shops from time to time. Recently I acquired three sets of those - all of them British WWI.
If one is lucky enough Mignot offerings of the thirties can be found as well."

"Since I graduated I've been working in a dynamic and quick world of advertising. My second occupation however was devoted strictly to my hobby or - should I say - passion. I've been writing a lot for both Polish and international hobby magazines. At the moment I'm a Contributing Editor of one of Poland's leading military history magazines called "Militaria & Fakty". To date 13 issues have been published. To see some samples just click here:

"Trivia like making money for living as well as my part time editorial activities cause that I suffer from a permanent lack of spare time. And although I did some modelling and painting in the past, 2-3 years ago I fully realised that I never ever would be able to cope with my shameful backlog of unmade kits and unpainted figures."

"Although I tried to - more or less - stick to the armoured vehicle and artillery topic (Britain's Daimler Dingo and Mk.I Male, Bengurion's Rolls-Royce armoured car, Toy Army Workshop's 18 pdr. and limber, Biggs' 4.5 in. howitzer etc.) I was getting more and more tempted by the colourful appeal of Victorian era.
Thus I ended up with an idea of collecting British/Colonial figures and equipment from period of uniform regulations of the mid-40's of 19th century to 1945."

"As I mentioned before my collection is still rather modest but hopefully it gets more and more complex in the future. We shall see however how much time is given . . ."
